Soft, smooth or velvety?

Three words describing how a wine feels. They do not automatically tell you how light, full-bodied or sweet it is.

Soft

The dry, grippy sensation of tannins is less prominent. A full-bodied wine can also feel soft.

Smooth

The wine feels approachable. Compare the fruit flavours and intensity in each bottle as well.

Velvety

A soft, enveloping texture in your mouth. Check the grapes and suggested food pairings to help you choose.

Choose for your occasion or meal.

Start with the flavours you enjoy. When pairing with food, consider the sauce, preparation and the bottle’s suggested food pairing.

Wine advice from De Wijnhandelaar · More about us

Which soft red wine suits my taste?

Compare the tasting notes. Solenne Negroamaro/Primitivo from Puglia combines dark fruit with softness and freshness. Sophie Schaal Pinot Noir from Alsace has blackberry, cherry and a smooth style. Biscardo Neropasso from Veneto is described with cherry, plum and a velvety texture. For red fruit and vanilla, compare Finca Museum El Perdiguero Crianza from Cigales. The guide shows available examples and current prices.

How do I choose a smooth red within my budget?

Check the current bottle prices in the guide and selection. A higher price alone does not mean a wine is softer or better suited to your taste. Compare styles first, then choose your budget. Use the wine finder to enter your occasion, taste and budget. To taste bottles side by side, combine them in the wine box or explore the home tasting box. Wait until your wines have arrived and you are ready to taste before rating them.
